Meeting Silas

We got the call that our birth mom was in labor on Saturday morning, August 31st (my mom's birthday!).  That was such an exciting moment.  We quickly got up, packed up our stuff and headed out to Utah.  The drive was pretty torturous, because I just wanted to be there.  We got a message from our social worker about 7 hours into our drive that he was born.  That made the rest of the drive feel even longer.  His birth mom was exhausted from her labor, and we got to Utah late that night, so we had to wait until the next day to meet him.  But, I wanted Silas to know that, even though we didn't get to see him on the day he was born, we still went to the hospital.  So, Nick and I drove to the hospital that night and took a picture, just so we could say we were there.
The next morning, we got to go to the hospital and meet our little man.  It was such a strange and amazing experience. We walked into the room and saw him laying there, but his birth mom was also in the room.  And, at that moment, he was still hers. We stood over him briefly, admiring his cuteness, then we sat down and chatted with our birth mom for a bit and tried to sneak glances at our little guy.  He was so little and adorable, and I just wanted to scoop him up and kiss him.  Not too much time passed before it was time to feed him.  At that point, I got to take him and feed him, and we took turns holding him the rest of the time while we continued visiting with his birth mom. We just marveled at how beautiful and perfect he was.  She even let our family come in and meet him and hold him too.  I think seeing all of us loving him gave her a lot of peace that she was doing the right thing and that he is going to grow up very very loved.
We were immediately in love.

After several hours of visiting, it was time for us to leave and time for our birth mom to sign the papers that would give him to us.  As hard as it was for her, she did it.  Then she got to spend one last night with him before we took him home.  I can't even begin to express the respect and love we feel for this woman, who made such a courageous choice. There is not a doubt in my mind that she loves this boy with all her heart.  She wanted a better life for him and loved him enough to give that to him.

That night, our family in Utah barbecued and had a little birthday celebration in honor of my mom and Silas. We were so blessed to have my dad's family hosting us and sharing this special time with us!
I've got many more posts to come about this little guy and our time in Utah. I'm going to try to be consistent with blogging between loving on this little guy.  It doesn't hurt that he loves to lay on my chest while I type. I just can't get enough of him!
