Some Halloween Art

 Here we have some stained glass pumpkins which were made by my class last week (thanks to my mother-in-law, who gave me the art lesson for these). 

These are very easy to make, and so pretty.  Here's what you have to do to make them:
1. Take a black sheet of construction paper and trace a pumpkin using glue from a glue bottle, including all those lines down the middle of the pumpkin. 
2. Let the glue dry over night.
3.  Use oil pastels to color the different sections of your pumpkins.
4.  Laminate (not essential, but does make them look more stained glass"ish".)
**The key is finding glue that dries completely clear.  If you get the wrong kind of glue, it dries white, and it is not nearly as pretty. 

The kids also glittered some bats to add to our little pumpkin patch.

Then we attempted to make pumpkins like the ones here on Kristina's blog.  They didn't quite turn out like that, but they still made some cute garland around the room.

apartment therapy.

So yesterday I wore my hair in pig tails.....and I'd say, it was a good day. A very good day.

First off, it was my best day at school this year.  My kids were so good. Also, a Biola student started doing some observation in my class, and I think I love her....and, I think the feeling is mutual.

Anyways, the good day turned into the best day when I sent the kids out to P.E. and checked my email.  This email was sitting in my inbox....

WHAT????

Apartment Therapy, people!!!  Do you know how huge that is?  If you don't, you must live in a hole that clearly does not have internet access.  This is unreal!

Another project that, when it's all said and done, could also be Apartment Therapy worthy.  Nick used our broken fence to frame our bathroom mirror.  I LOVE it!  More on that later.

And then Nick, Amy and I went out to dinner to celebrate it all.

Wow! This day was amazing.  I can't get over it.

week one. done.

The first week of school is over.  Only 41 more weeks to go.

Here are some week one highlights:

1) When I was telling my class the order that they stand in line, one of my students told me that he doesn't stand in lines.

2) When I asked this same student where he went to school last year, he told me that his school's name was "Elementary School."

3) When I opened the door to let the kids in on the very first day, one of the moms said to me, "Oooooh.  Kids got sexy teacher."

I think we are in for an interesting year.

Fluffy

Once a month, we have a police officer who comes in to teach "Too Good for Drugs" to the class.  She was talking about making healthy choices today and brought up "fluffy" people.  She herself is a "fluffy" person, so she was emphasizing the fact that it is important not to make fun of fluffy people.  We all found this to be very amusing.  

Well, she came and went and the day went on. 

Right before lunch, one of my students raised his hand, and when I called on him, he informed me that one of my lovely little boys had been telling other kids in the class that I am "fluffy".  So, I called my little friend over to have a chat with him about that.

The conversation went pretty much like this: (I will refer to my little friend as S.)

Me: Did you tell people that I am fluffy?

S: Yes.

Me: Why would you say that?

S: Well it's just my opinion.  I just think you are a little "fluffy"

Me: Do you know what fluffy means?

S: Yes, it means chubby.

Me: Ok, what makes you think that I am chubby?

S: Well, I just think you are a little fluffy.  It's just my opinion.

Me: Okay, what about me would you say is fluffy?

S: Um, like in the stomach area a little bit.

Me: Okay.  So, you think that I need to lose some weight.

S: No, I think you are a nice size.  I just think you are a little "fluffy".

Me: Ok, but fluffy means that I need to lose weight, so you think that I need to lose some weight in my stomach.

S: Well, I mean it's not like it's a lot.  I think you are a nice size.  Like, if you just walked a little every day, you would be able to get rid of it.

Me: I run everyday

S: Oh

And then of course I went into the whole lecture about how if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.  

And, I gave him a behavior slip.  

In my head, I was dying laughing.  I didn't want the conversation to end because he was saying the funniest things.

This was all coming from the same kid who randomly said when we were walking to the library one day, "Mrs. Kinnier, you're skinny."  He didn't seem to have any recollection of that.  I guess I've gained some weight this year.

Character Parade 2010

Every year, we have a Character Parade at school.  This year, the fourth and fifth grade teachers each decided to dress up as a different Little Miss.  

This was mine:

My room mom is amazing this year.  She transformed my room into a Halloween wonderland for our party.  We were decked out with black tablecloths, caution tape, spiderwebs, bats, skeletons, strobe lights, and even Halloween music.  It was so much fun!

It was fun for me to have my room decorated since I can't decorate my house in its current state. Maybe I can have my house back in time to decorate for Christmas?

(p.s. when I was putting my pictures in a folder, I accidentally titled the folder Halloweed....hmmmmm.)

This is probably my favorite week of the year at school.  We have an annual Scotty Olympics, where each class represents a different country and competes against each other.  It is so much fun!

Monday was the opening ceremonies.  My class is China, and we got to be the host country this year.  We were decked out with a dragon, costumes, and banners.

Today we competed in 6 events. We got ready this morning by painting our faces and making headbands.

One of the events is the 50 meter dash.  Then, in the afternoon, the top 4 runners from each class are chosen to run in a relay race. The whole school gathers together to watch each grade level race each other.  It is so much fun and such a neat bonding experience for each class.

And, it is really fun when you win.....and WE DID! 

We had a blast today and are looking forward to the awards ceremony tomorrow.

Don't you love the shirts?  Sara Ancich, one of the moms from my class, came up with the design and helped me make them...they turned out amazing!
